We had the chance to talk with Timo Leonetti about his amzing South African XC record (562km):
How you decided to go to South Africa and how is there for support?
I have been thinking of going to SA for one year now but the biggest deal was to find an organization to tow and retrieve there. I was in contact with Damien and Clément to try to organize something. But at the end it wasn’t sure if we could get 2 tows working for us so I let them go both with 1 tow and stay in Corsica. But as they were there in South Africa, we found an old tow of my uncle that he bring from SA 25 years ago to tow Antoine Montant for acro in Corsica. We also saw good conditions coming in SA. So in three days we tried to get the tow operational and my parents to tow and do the retrieve for me. We bought the plane the day before leaving. With the tow on the bags. Arrived in SA the 8th but had a problem with the rental car. We finally got a car at midnight. The 9th at 5am we took the road to Bradvlei. At 10h we tried towing (first one for my parents, my mom driving and dad at the back of the car for the pressure regulation). I was able to find a small thermal and finally touched feet on the ground 10h and 562k later. 30min later my parents found me already for the retrieve. A lot of emotions and some tears after this flight and all story that made it happen.
How was the day for flying?
The day started with slow wind and all blue. It was very turbulent and thermals difficult to find. After that, the wind picked up to 40 to 50kmh and we were faster. I had one scary low safe with 55kmh gusts. After we got at the high cloudbase at 5700m. Very fast flying with speeds up to 120kmh. As I did not carry oxygen or hot clothes I had a little hypoxia with few minutes going on the wrong direction at 5600m. But after some good breath I felt good again. And then last base at 5000m at 18h30 and beautiful 1h30 glide to end after sunset.
Do you think it is possible to do 600?
For sure it's possible to make 600 there, just need to stay safe with the conditions and terrain because it can turn into a very dangerous situation. Let's see tomorrow
How do you like the Boomerang 12 there?
As always I love the B12, simply the best glider I flew. Easy to turn on some very wild thermals. And not overshooting too much on some crazy turbulences.
How long will you stay there?
We are planning to stay until 23th of January. The plan is to fly on the good days and if the weather is not very good to go on safari trip or to discover Namibia with our tow and paragliding
